Springtime freight is coming on strong, and rates are climbing. We're starting to see more of the seasonal trends we're used to, but freight rates from DAT RateView show that van rates (including fuel surcharge) on the spot market for February were down 5.1% compared to a year ago. As a national average, that equates to about a 10¢ difference per mile. Spot market rates were elevated throughout 2014 because of the Polar Vortex, but DAT RateView™ data shows that, if you take away the fuel surcharge, the average linehaul rate was actually 9¢ higher in February 2015 than the previous year.

Diesel was $2.90 per gallon on average nationally at the end of February, $1.11 cheaper than the previous year. As a result, the average fuel surcharge in February 2015 was down to 29¢ per mile, 11¢ lower than last year.

Here are six ways that lower oil prices are changing trucking in 2015:

Wave goodbye to the energy boom: After current drilling projects are completed in the first quarter, there won't be much new drilling or fracking activity for the rest of 2015. Several major oil companies have already announced plans to cease drilling, due to low oil prices, and many smaller companies are busy reworking their 2015 plans.

The impact on trucking freight is twofold: First, there will be less oil-industry cargo to move, including drilling equipment and infrastructure items, such as pipe and controls. Second, there will be less competition for drivers from this sector. These factors combine to increase downward pressure on rates, which started to drift lower last week. That trend is assisted by the declining fuel surcharge.

Doosan and Bobcat Company have announced their continued support of innovation in education by donating $3 million to North Dakota State University (NDSU) to fund a STEM-related scholarship program. The State of North Dakota will match the donation, adding $1.5 million — making the combined gift of $4.5 million the single largest gift to establish a scholarship endowment in NDSU history.

Prior to a press conference announcing the gift, the formal agreement was signed by NDSU President Dean Bresciani and Doosan Group Chairman YM Park. Scott Park, president and CEO of Doosan Infracore Bobcat Holdings Co., Ltd.; and Rich Goldsbury, president of Doosan and Bobcat Company, North America and Oceania, were also present. Chairman YM Park traveled to Fargo for the ceremonial signing from Seoul, South Korea. YM Park is also chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
