Hay Rakes and More

Rotary hay rakes and tedders help speed up the haymaking process by spreading out and turning over freshly-mowed hay so that it can dry faster. We have a comprehensive list of popular brands of new and used hay equipment, so if it’s a New Holland hay rake that you’re after, then our sellers have you readily covered.

Tedders vs Rotary Rakes

Once the hay has been mowed, a tedder fluffs up the hay so that air and sunlight can reach all of the hay and prevent moisture, which causes mold once the hay’s been baled. Drying hay is a long process, and a tedder can easily save a day or more under the right conditions. However, too much tedding can strip the leaves off of alfalfa and clover, which makes the hay much less nutritious to livestock.

A rotary rake turns the hay a final time so that the bottom can fully dry. At this point, the hay is in a neat row, known as a windrow, that is ready to be baled. If you are looking for a reliable design, the Rolabar New Holland hay rake series recently had its 50th anniversary in 2017.

Rotary rakes are always required for haymaking, but tedders are not. If you live in dry areas with a lot of sunlight and wind, then you might be able to get away with not using a tedder. There are “2-in-1” tedder and rotary rake combination units that can save you the cost of buying both machines; however, they are meant for smaller “hobby farms” and cannot be used with mowers or mower conditions that are larger than 10 feet.
