Boom lifts—also called aerial lifts, cherry pickers and man lifts—combine height, horizontal reach and precise basket control so crews can work safely around obstacles, façades and utilities. Choose from electric indoor models to diesel rough-terrain units with 4WD and oscillating axles for uneven ground.

Spec Decisions That Matter

  • Platform height & working height: size for your top task and add clearance; working height is typically platform height + 6 ft.
  • Horizontal outreach: key for façade and over-roof work; telescopic booms lead here.
  • Articulating vs. telescopic: articulating gets around obstacles; telescopic goes far and fast.
  • Power source: electric for indoor/low-emission sites; diesel for outdoor gradeability.
  • Capacity & jib: check basket rating and whether a jib adds extra articulation.
  • Tires/undercarriage: non-marking for interiors; foam-filled or RT tires for jobsite hazards.

Articulating vs. telescopic boom—what’s the difference?

Articulating (knuckle) booms bend around obstacles and excel at up-and-over access. Telescopic (straight) booms extend in a line for the longest horizontal outreach and faster elevation to working height.

Typical boom-lift prices (April 2026)

Based on current marketplace listings, used boom lifts typically list from about $10,000 – $181,000 depending on platform height, outreach, power source and hours. (New-unit pricing varies by spec and OEM—see current listings.)

What platform height do I need?

Match platform height to the work plus operator clearance: 30–45 ft for light commercial, 60–85 ft for warehouses and mid-rise façades, 120 ft+ for stadiums or wind/industrial. Remember working height ≈ platform height + 6 ft.

Electric vs. diesel—when should I choose each?

Electric booms are ideal indoors or emissions-sensitive sites with smooth floors. Diesel rough-terrain models add 4WD, oscillating axles and higher gradeability for outdoor or uneven ground.

Towable boom or self-propelled?

Towable booms cost less and are easy to transport but have lower capacities and slower setup. Self-propelled booms lift faster, carry heavier loads and cover more ground on large sites.
