Size and Horsepower

Rotary cutters can be anywhere from 3 feet to 26 feet long, and they need to be pulled by a tractor, so the Power Take-Off (PTO) must always be considered. When deciding on a width, make sure that the cutters extend past the tractor’s tires to ensure that all of the land is getting mowed. Keep in mind that the blades can be adjusted to cut anywhere between 1 ½ to 9 inches.

Try to choose a tractor with slightly more horsepower than needed so that you don’t wear out the transmission. Small horse farms need at least a 5-foot-wide rotary mower (though 10 feet is optimal) and a tractor with at least 25 horsepower to pull it (though 50 horsepower is optimal). Larger commercial rotary mowers may require powerful tractors with upwards of 250 horsepower to properly function.
