Choosing a Tractor for Sale (Horsepower)

Horsepower is one of the most important factors when looking at new and used tractors for sale. You don’t want to get a tractor that is way too big for the job, but it should have slightly more horsepower than you need (since operating at maximum capacity will wear out your tractor more quickly). Most farmers decide on a smaller tractor for sale that’s between 16 to 45 horsepower.

Manure spreaders, snow blades, and other attachments generally need at least a 7-horsepower tractor, though more power is usually needed for a smoother operation. The largest used tractors for sale, meant for commercial farming, are around 500 horsepower.

Transmission Types

Standard – With a clutch controlling 8 forward and 8 reverse gears, this transmission is for straightforward jobs without many stops or reverses (like pulling a log). Some models, like a New Holland tractor, will have a cruise control instead of holding the pedal.

Hydraulic Shuttle Shift – This is mostly the same design as a standard transmission, but with 8-24 reverse and forward gears, it’s meant for larger tractors. Most used Kubota tractors for sale don’t require a clutch to move from forward to reverse.

Hydrostatic – This design lets smaller tractors for sale start and stop with ease. A rocker pedal controls three gear speeds, and most used Kubota tractors for sale don’t require a clutch to increase the speed or change directions.
