Types of Forklifts

• Pneumatic forklifts – Tires made of solid rubber or filled with foam.
  • Forklifts used for outdoors.
• Cushion tire forklifts – Extra thick rubber tires molded around a solid steel band.
  • Forklifts for indoor and (limited) outdoor use.

Finding the Right Forklift for Sale

Before you buy a forklift, know . . .

• If the forklift is used indoors or outdoors (or both).
• If the floor surface is rough or smooth.
• What the average load-size is (weight and width).
• What the average lifting height is.
• Any height restrictions and obstacles.
• The type of materials being handled (you could need additional attachments).
• Fuel type (electric, diesel or gas).

Buying Used Forklifts

When buying a used forklift, always check the . . .

• Forks – Are they cracked, bent, or otherwise distorted from overloading?
• Mast – Are the rollers and lifting chains okay? Welding repairs are generally a red flag.
• Hydraulics – The used forklift should have no leaks, cracked covers, or kinks.
• Engine – The forklift should make no worrisome noises and smoothly shift.
• Tires – Look for missing rubber chunks, slashes, and damage to the sidewalls.
