The most widespread pandemic of modern history has been active for the better part of a year. With that, there isn't much that hasn't already been said in terms of the emotional toll and drastic subsequent effects of COVID-19. From the initial shockwave to now, much of this crisis has been about acquiring the right tools to ward off an invisible threat.

From personal protective equipment, to cleaning supplies, and additional food rations, the American public might say they have never relied on grocery stores as much as they did during 2020. But what Americans may not realize is that they were actually relying on the trucking industry to keep those stores open. A resource covering the trends of trucking and transportation published by Linchpin reported that almost 70% of goods transported in America are mobilized by trucks, and if truck drivers stopped delivering their products, the majority of grocery stores would find their inventory depleted within three days.

It's safe to say that the trucking industry made a substantial impact toward supporting Americans since the pandemic was declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11, 2020. But how has the trucking industry itself fared during this unprecedented time in history? As longtime supporters of the trucking and transportation sector, the team at My Little Salesman has reviewed statistics and testimony from across the industry in order to draw a consensus.

The year was 1958. It was the heyday of salesmen, those kings of the open road who traveled far and wide to visit their customers and close the “big deals,” relying on their extensive product knowledge, charm and drive. Salesmen were admired, respected—a man could go from rags to riches simply through the sweat he poured into his territory and the passion he had for his product.

It was a very different time, one when truck or equipment salesmen worked 9–5 and didn’t have cell phones or email—in fact, they often didn’t even have their own phones in their offices. Although they were frequently on the road, communication was limited, as they relied chiefly on pay phones and were only able to see customers in person maybe once a month.

We started Portland Tractor in 1976 by supplying the industry rebuilt and used heavy machinery parts and components. Since the beginning, we have worked hard to build a reputation for honestly communicating with customers and reliably delivering what they need in a timely manner. It was hard work, but worth every effort because of the customer relationships and people we have helped. To us, honesty means being up front with what we can do, what we can't do. The bottom line is simple we tell the truth about any used part or component and then stand behind the quality of our product. Sticking to these principles has allowed Portland Tractor to build the relationships that have become the cornerstone of our company today.

In January of 2000, Vince Anderson and Lew Tripp started Rainbow Equipment Sales with the dream to be their own bosses and sell quality, job-ready used equipment to buyers who know the value that brings to their operation. Lew puts it simply, “Lots of people can buy a piece of ‘coal’ cheap, then try to polish it up to look like a ‘diamond’. But it takes a lot of work to find those few ‘diamonds’ in the used equipment industry that don’t have all the flaws of rebuilt equipment and deliver that inventory to buyers. That is what we do, deliver the diamonds among the coal.”
